Automechanika Frankfurt 2026 closed at 112,000 visitors and 4,400 exhibitors, and the organiser's report never mentions hand tools: the number that matters is German visitors up 18.5%, and the next fair is Shanghai in twelve days
112,000 trade visitors. 4,400 exhibitors. Five days, 8 to 12 September. Messe Frankfurt put the closing numbers for Automechanika Frankfurt 2026 out on 12 September and re-issued them for the trade press on the 14th, and the two versions do not say the same thing.
Read the first one and the fair was 70 per cent foreign, 30 per cent German. Read the second and it is 66 and 34, with a line the first did not carry: German trade visitors up 18.5 per cent. Detlef Braun of Messe Frankfurt's board calls it the first "significant growth in this area" for "a long while". That is the number in this report that matters to anyone shipping hand tools into Europe, because it is German garages, not visiting delegations, that buy a socket set on a Tuesday.
Set the headline against 2024 and it is smaller than it looks. The 2024 closing report said 4,200 exhibitors and 108,000 visitors. This year's report restates 2024 as 104,750 in a footnote. Take the organiser's own earlier figure and visitors rose 3.7 per cent; take the footnote and it is 6.9 per cent. Exhibitors rose 4.8 per cent either way.
4.8 per cent.
Now read the release for what it does not say. It does not mention hand tools. It does not mention Taiwan, or Asia, or a single tool brand. Its content is software-defined vehicles, driver assistance, a 200-metre pit lane and a forecast of 817,000 battery-electric registrations in Germany this year. The word "workshop" appears, but as a place that buys diagnostics, not spanners. TOPTUL's five launches at Booth F43, the ones this site previewed on 12 September, are invisible in the organiser's account of its own fair.
That is not a complaint. It is the finding. Frankfurt is now an aftermarket-electronics show with a hand-tool hall attached, and the closing report is honest about which half it is selling.
The satisfaction figures are the ones organisers always print: 96 per cent of visitors satisfied, four points up on 2024; 89 per cent would recommend; 90 per cent of exhibitors intend to come back, 93 per cent of the German ones. The next edition is 5 to 9 September 2028. Nobody who sells tools into Pakistan needs to wait that long.
The fair that sets a hand-tool importer's Q1 prices is twelve days away. The China International Hardware Show runs 28 to 30 September at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, and its exhibitor list is hand, power and pneumatic tools, fasteners and locks: the catalogue, in other words, rather than the car. After that, Koelnmesse's Tashkent fair on 24 November, which is the one closest to a Karachi buyer's flight budget.
One call, and it is mine, not Messe Frankfurt's. The organiser cut 2024's visitor count by three per cent between its own closing report and this year's footnote, and cut the foreign share by four points in 48 hours. I expect the 112,000 to be restated below 110,000 in an audited figure before 31 March 2027, and I expect that restatement to change nothing for a tool exporter, because the number that moves a Pakistani order book is the 18.5 per cent more German garages that walked the halls. If the German figure is revised down too, I was wrong about the fair and right about the report.
The five TOPTUL part numbers from Booth F43 are the stock enquiry: KSAC1680, GE-12518V, KARA0306, ANBV1635, GAAI0702. Ask for a Shanghai-fair price on them before 30 September and a Frankfurt price after, and see which one moves.
