Chinese New Year 2027: when your hand-tool order is due

If you want hand tools on the shelf before spring, the order is due in November, not January. Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, and the date that governs your container sits about three months ahead of it: purchase order frozen in November, production through November and December, goods inspected and dispatched by early January. After that, capacity tightens, and mid-January to late February is not a window to plan a delivery around.

This cycle is tighter than last year's. The 2026 festival fell on 17 February; 2027's is eleven days earlier, so every stage of the calendar moves back with it. The ODM Group's 2027 planning guide puts supplier selection and quotation in September and October 2026, final approval and purchase order "by November 2026", mass production in November and December, and inspection and shipment from December to early January. That guide is written for custom product development, so for a catalogue line the factory already tools you can drop the sampling stages. You cannot drop the two at the end. The last production date and the shipping window are set by the factory's calendar, not by yours.

How long is the factory actually shut?

Longer than the holiday, and the tail is what catches importers out. Insight Quality Services reports that most factories are "fully closed for at least two weeks", many for two to four, and that it can take "up to a month for production to return to full capacity after the holiday".

The reason is people, not machines:

So the first weeks back go on hiring and retraining, and a line quoted at four weeks in October is not a four-week line in February. Treat any lead time a supplier gives you for that period as a best case, and do not let a February promise carry a customer commitment.

What to get in writing before the deposit

Four dates, from the factory itself. China's official 2027 public holiday schedule had not been announced when the ODM guide was published, so no published calendar can answer this for you — only the supplier's own notice can. Ask for the final date it will accept new purchase orders, the last available production date, the final quality-control inspection window, and the reopening plan. A supplier that gives you four dates is one you can plan around; a supplier that answers only "we close for a week" has told you nothing you can use.

Add one question the standard list leaves out: how many of your operators were back at the bench two weeks after last year's holiday. A number, even a rough one, tells you which end of the two-to-four-week range this factory sits at.

What belongs on that November order

The cheap things. Consumables are what fail mid-job, and consumables are what nobody puts on a purchase order because each line looks trivial: cut-off discs, drill bits, and the sockets that always go — 10, 13, 17 and 19 mm. Count the drawer now, put a year's worth of them on one line, and let the slower-moving items ride the same container rather than waiting for a second one that will not sail until March.
