Diesel is Rs 398 a litre: what the TP250001's rating plate promises, what ISO 8528-1 defines, and what the catalogue rounds

High-speed diesel is Rs 398.04 a litre from this morning, 11 September, the fourth consecutive daily increase under the notification issued by the Petroleum Division and OGRA. Every generator in the catalogue now costs more to run than it did on Monday, and the question a buyer should be asking is not "which is cheapest" but "what does the number on the plate actually promise". On the TOTAL sets we stock, the manufacturer's sheet gives two numbers, "Max. output" and "Rated output", and the catalogue rounds to the first. The standard that governs generator ratings, ISO 8528-1, does not recognise either word.

What the listing says and what the sheet says

The catalogue search for "generator" returns eleven units: six Total Tool and five inTough. TOTAL publishes a specification page per part number at totalbusiness.com; inTough has no manufacturer site that I can find, so its G-series sets are listed here as stocked and nothing more, because there is no sheet to hold them to.

Two things in that table should change how a buyer reads the shelf. The "3.5 kW" TP135006E and the "3 kW" TP130005 have the same rated output, 2.8 kW; the extra half-kilowatt is in the maximum figure only. And the TP280001 that the catalogue lists at 8 kW does not appear among the twelve models on TOTAL's own generator page. It may be a regional or discontinued number. Until the supplier confirms it, treat the 8 kW as unverified.

What ISO 8528-1 actually defines

ISO 8528-1 is the standard for reciprocating-engine generating sets, and it defines four power ratings. Caterpillar's white paper Demystifying Generator Set Ratings sets them out against the 2005 edition of the standard, and its wording is the one used here.

Notice what is not in that table: "maximum output". The standard has no such category. When a sheet says Max. 5.0 kW and Rated 4.5 kW and does not say which ISO rating the 4.5 kW is, the buyer is left to infer. TOTAL's TP250001 page says neither COP, PRP, LTP nor ESP. The honest inference for a set that runs through every load-shedding hour of a Taxila summer is that "rated" behaves like Prime Power: unlimited hours, but an average load no higher than 70%. For the TP250001 that is 3.15 kW average, with 4.5 kW available for the peaks and 4.95 kW for one hour in twelve. Plan the workshop's load around 3.15, not 5.0.

Caterpillar adds that ISO 8528 is "a minimal standard" which "defers to the manufacturer to determine the final rating definition". So the rating class is a question to put to the seller in writing. If the answer is "5 kW", the seller has not answered.

What 4.5 kW carries, from TOTAL's own load sheets

A 3.15 kW average with 4.5 kW peaks will carry TOTAL's TC2200506 compressor (1.5 kW, 50 L tank) with lighting and a grinder, or the TC2301006 (2.2 kW, 100 L) with less headroom. The TC1402002 at 3.0 kW (200 L) takes the whole average on its own. The TC1553002 (4.1 kW) and TC1755002 (5.5 kW) are 380 V three-phase, and no set in the catalogue produces three-phase power at all. Nor does any of them run a CNC machine tool; that is the honest headline for a machining shop, and it is why the workshop's own machines are on a different supply from the sets sold here.

One more caution the sheet does not carry: an induction motor on a compressor draws well above its running current for the second or two it takes to spin up. TOTAL gives no motor-starting figure for any set, and the 10% overload in a Prime rating is for an hour of steady load, not for a start.

Welding is its own case. TOTAL makes a diesel welder-generator, the TP446001: the same 418 mL, 9.0 HP engine driving 4.6 kW of power and a 50–180 A welding output for 1.6–4.0 mm electrodes, insulation class F, 15 L tank, "no welding accessories included". That is the correct answer for a fabrication crew running stick on diesel, and it is not in our catalogue. Neither is the three-phase silent set, the TP250003, whose sheet carries the number every buyer of a three-phase set should know: 5.0 kW maximum at 380–415 V, but only 1.6 kW maximum and 1.5 kW rated on the 220–240 V single-phase outlet. A "5 kW" three-phase set is a 1.5 kW set for single-phase tools. Both part numbers are on the sourcing list.

What an hour costs at Rs 398.04, with the working shown

TOTAL's pages do not state fuel consumption for any generator. So the figure below is ours, built from a comparable engine, and it should be read as an estimate until TOTAL publishes its own.

The TP250001's engine is described only as "Diesel 9.0HP, 418 mL, air-cooled". That displacement and power match the 186FA class of single-cylinder air-cooled diesel, and one maker of that engine, ETK Power, publishes 273.5 g/kWh at 3,000 rpm. Take the alternator at 85% efficiency, diesel at 0.84 kg per litre, and the arithmetic is:

Our estimate. Assumes the engine's specific fuel consumption is flat across load, which flatters the part-load rows; real small diesels burn proportionally more at low load. Diesel prices from Business Recorder's notifications; the 7 September figure is implied by BR's four-day cumulative of Rs 19.99.

At full rated load that is about Rs 150 per kilowatt-hour, and Rs 34 an hour more than it was on Monday. Thursday's step to Rs 392.67, the one Aaj News led its bulletin with, was itself overtaken by this morning's notification. A shop that runs a set six hours a day through load-shedding is paying roughly Rs 200 more per day for the same electricity than it was at the start of the week, and the mechanism that produced the four increases — daily pricing on a seven-day rolling average, in force since 18 July according to Business Recorder — will keep producing them for as long as Brent stays where it closed on Thursday. "Silent" is not a number either

TOTAL's sheet for the TP250001 says "Silent type diesel generator" and gives no sound pressure level. Bison's review of a comparable 5 kW canopied set is chaptered with a noise-level test at seven metres, the distance the trade uses; the number, whatever it is on TOTAL's unit, is not on the sheet. So "silent" on the listing means "has a canopy". The canopy is real — it is why the unit weighs 154 kg against 102 kg for TOTAL's open-frame diesel of the same output, the TP450001 — but a buyer placing the set under a window should ask for the dB(A) at 7 m in writing, and should not accept "silent" as the answer.

What to ask before the order, in six part numbers

From the catalogue as it stands: for lighting, a compressor up to 2.2 kW and hand tools on a duty cycle, the TP250001 (4.5 kW rated, diesel, electric start) is the unit; for a smaller petrol set with electric start, the TP130005-1 and TP135006E are the same 2.8 kW rated machine with different maximum figures, so pay for the one with the features you need rather than the higher number; for 5.0 kW rated on petrol, the TP155001. The TP280001 waits on confirmation. For a welding crew, ask us about the TP446001; for a three-phase set, the TP250003, remembering the 1.5 kW single-phase limit.

And three questions for any seller, TOTAL or otherwise, that the standard entitles you to ask: which ISO 8528-1 rating class the rated output is; the fuel consumption at 75% load, in litres per hour; and the sound level at 7 m. Two of the three are not on any sheet we can find today. That is the compliance gap, and the diesel price is the reason to close it this week rather than next quarter.
