Torque data is becoming part of the tool: what the Makita-Panasonic deal changes for a workshop
On 1 September, Makita completed its purchase of Panasonic's power tools business. The part that matters to anyone buying tools for a factory is not the badge change — it is that the deal included factory fastening equipment and industrial IoT, and that torque data is quietly becoming part of the product.
The facts first, from both companies' own newsrooms. On 1 September 2026, Panasonic Electric Works and Makita Corporation completed the share transfer agreed on 24 March 2026. Panasonic had incorporated a successor company in April named NEXRA Field Works Co., Ltd.; on completion Makita took all of its shares and the company was renamed Makita Industrial Tools Corporation. Assets, contracts and employees moved with it, along with certain manufacturing and sales functions held by Panasonic group companies overseas.

What actually changed hands
Not just cordless drills. The acquired business covers power tools, factory and construction fastening equipment, and factory-oriented IoT solutions — and Makita has been explicit that this is the point. It says it will combine its battery and motor technology and global distribution with Panasonic Electric Works' expertise in fastening and industrial IoT, and expand into factory-oriented markets, serving customers "from construction sites to manufacturing facilities". What Panasonic brought, in the trade press's summary, is advanced torque-control technology and IoT-enabled data management used in manufacturing.
Neither company disclosed a price, headcount or revenue figure. So the honest reading of this is strategic, not financial: a jobsite tool brand has bought its way onto the factory floor, and the thing it bought is the ability to record what a fastener was tightened to.
Why a tool distributor should pay attention to that
Because it points at where the definition of "professional tool" is heading. On a production line, an assembly torque that is not logged is an assembly torque that cannot be proven. That is why fastening systems with controllers, torque verification and data capture are a separate product category from the wrench in a mechanic's box — and why a company would pay for one rather than build it.

That is a mechanical-tools catalogue for workshops, garages and site work, and it is a good one for that. It is not a factory fastening catalogue, and the Makita–Panasonic deal is a fair warning that the two are separating rather than converging.

If a customer running a production line asked us for tightening systems tomorrow, these are the things that would have to be true first — and none of them is true yet:
- Calibration traceability. A torque tool sold into a quality system needs a certificate with a traceable standard behind it, and a route to recalibration that does not involve shipping it abroad and hoping.
- Someone to support the software. A controller that writes data has to write it somewhere a customer's systems can read. Selling the hardware and shrugging at the integration is worse than not selling it.
