YATO tools: Polish name, Chinese build, and what to ask

You are buying a Chinese-made tool set to a Polish specification, priced in dollars, and guaranteed by whoever sold it to you. That is not a criticism of YATO. It is what TOYA S.A., the Wroclaw company that owns the name, tells its own shareholders: its business is "the distribution of goods whose main producers and suppliers are companies located in China", it settles with those suppliers in US dollars and yuan, and it consolidates through a subsidiary, Yato Tools (Jiaxing), running a high-bay warehouse at Baibu in Zhejiang, next to two of the largest container ports in the world.

Read that as three practical facts about your order rather than as a verdict on the tools. The forging is Chinese, so a YT-38941 or a YT-38841 is Chinese origin on the customs form. The purchase price is a dollar price, so the exchange rate on the day of invoicing is part of what you pay. And the case leaves Zhejiang when a consolidated load leaves, not when you ring.

Three things to settle before the order goes in

A date, quoted with the price, against the part number. TOYA does not name regional stock outside Europe. Its one capital project this half-year is a PLN 44.2 million deposit on a warehouse outside Warsaw, to shorten delivery times to Poland, and its filing describes no equivalent holding anywhere in Asia. So there is no shelf near you that a set comes off. Ask by part number, and make the answer a price and a shipping week in the same sentence. A quote without a date is a quote for a set that has not been allocated yet.

The rate the dollar price was converted at, and the date it holds until. The złoty in TOYA's headline results is TOYA's problem; the dollar in the purchase price is yours. On a set that ships on the next consolidation, the validity date on a quote is worth more to you than a two per cent discount, because a month of currency movement will eat the discount. Either fix the rate and the date in writing, or take the dollar price and carry the currency yourself deliberately.

Who replaces a broken ratchet, from what stock, in how many days. The reviews that built the brand's reputation, Darius Nastac's of the 216-piece YT-38841 among them, are filmed in European garages, where the maker's warranty is something a buyer can actually reach. Outside the markets TOYA names, it is the seller's warranty and nothing else. So the question to put to whoever quotes you is not whether the set is guaranteed. It is who holds the replacement parts, and how long it takes to get one.

Why the answer is unlikely to change soon

The filing's geography table is the reason. Group sales for the half were PLN 522.1 million, up from PLN 463.2 million. Every export region grew except Asia, which fell from PLN 23.4 million to PLN 21.7 million and is now 4.1 per cent of sales; inside it, the United Arab Emirates dropped from PLN 4.3 million to PLN 3.2 million. The named rows are Ukraine, Hungary, the UAE, India and Saudi Arabia, and the report points its Chinese subsidiaries at the Gulf, Africa and South America. If your market is not one of those rows, no regional stock is being built for it, and the answers above will stay the answers. TOYA reports again on 5 November, which is when to look for a change.

None of which makes the sets a bad buy. A well-specified Chinese-forged set with a European drawing behind it is a reasonable thing to own, as long as you price it as what it is.
